The first 3-month portion is the same as 3-month intensive course (the basic plan). For the information, please see http://hatsuonkyosei.com/index.php/courses/facebook-course/

From Week 13, in a secret Facebook group, you will watch live lessons, do homework each week by creating a presentation slides and video, record sessions with your client, get individually customized feedback on how you can improve.

From the training program, you will learn:

  • Which English sounds are in Japanese, which English sounds are difficult for Japanese, which English sounds need to be pronounced clearly in order to be understood by native speakers.
  • International Phonetics Alphabets (IPA) and how to transcribe human speech with IPA.
  • How to detect sounds by listening.
  • Common mistakes that Japanese make when it comes to speaking English.
  • How to give positive feedback to encourage the clients.

This training portion covers phonetics (University Level) and how to detect sounds. This course includes a practicum which you actually work with your client (Find a client to work with by Week 17) and record a 2 – 3 minute session each week from Week 18.

The program covers historical linguistics (sound changes overtime and why English spelling seems crazy and random), language acquisition (which sounds are difficult universally), intonation study (it is a fairly new field in linguistics), cultural differences (culture creates its pronunciation and tongue position), breathing differences (again the breathing ways in English and Japanese are different because of cultural differences) as well as ear training exercises, and transcription (IPA and diacritics). Aiko packed so much information in this 2-month portion from her study and research experience at UCLA in linguistics and 18 years of living in the US, and coaching actors, singers, business owners, and professionally working clients experiences.

The reason why the program covers a lot of linguistics basics is that so you will be ready to answer your future clients’ questions. I will tell you this, from my own experience. Most of people, who have contacted me for pronunciation lessons, have studied and tried many different things to improve their pronunciation already. Some of them already knew all the IPA symbols, and others knew all the vowels in American English before they contacted me. Some have already taken accent reduction lessons from someone else. I had to make sure that I learn and practice a lot on my own to coach them (I still practice a lot and take singing lessons and other lessons to improve my own skills!). My clients have asked me questions that were pretty advanced and I had to think about! This is the reason why I put so much information in this 2-month portion, so you will be covered! Of course, leaning pronunciation is lifelong learning, but at least you will have a good chunk of information about linguistics after completing this program.

Course Schedule from Week 13 (Week 1-12 is the same as the intensive course)

  • Week 13: Evaluation, Rhythm, Breathing and Intonation

  • Week 14: Phonetics – Vowels

  • Week 15: Phonetic – Consonants

  • Week 16: Phonetic Transcription Practice

  • Week 17: Detect Sounds by Listening

  • Week 18: Practicum – Evaluation, Rhythm and Intonation

  • Week 19: Practicum – Vowels

  • Week 20: Practicum – Consonants

From Week 13, each week,

  • A lesson video (2 hours) will be posted.
  • You will create presentation slides and video and post it each week
  • Week 18 – 20, record a 2-3 minute session with your client.
  • Individually customized feedback (20 min) will be posted.

This course is suitable for you if you:

  • Have excellent pronunciation and listening skills.
  • Are an English teacher, wanting to teach pronunciation.
  • Have passion to help others, using your skills.

Serious students only. This 5-month program is very intensive. And you will work with your client as a practicum. You will need a lot of time to practice, memorize, and prepare for your sessions. If you are serious, this course will help you become a great pronunciation coach!

Testimonial from Yukari Weber

“I can’t say enough Aiko is the best!! I figured out what she teaches can help Japanese English learners struggles. So I really wanted to learn deeper knowledge to be able to teach professionally. I know no one teaches pronunciation, phonetics, and linguists in details for Japanese people like she does. Not only I can provide pronunciation related support for my clients, now I can help them improve their listening skills tremendously. What I have learned from Aiko is that pronunciation is science. So everyone can improve his/her pronunciation as long as he/she practices it in the right ways. The more we practice effectively, the more we can KEEP improving. We don’t have to rely on just a hearing sense as human. I can teach my clients logically to improve their skills now. All her lessons also have improved my English skills as well. I am so happy with the outcome that I’ve got. And I can help my children and husband to pronounce Japanese words correctly, too. I couldn’t have done all these without taking Aiko’s course. Honestly, I want to recommend this program to everyone. But highly recommended especially for teachers and coaches who want to change English education for Japanese people”

Testimonial from Akiko Hatano

I decided to take Aiko’s course mainly because I needed to understand American pronunciation properly. As an English coach and teacher, I sometimes had trouble explaining how to move our tongue and use air to pronounce vowels or consonants correctly. Then a friend of mine, who is an excellent English coach, strongly recommended Aiko’s course. She said Aiko is far better than any other pronunciation coaches around her, which was quite convincing! During the five-month coach training program (that consists of 3-month intensive course and 2-month coach training course), I always learned something new. Both courses were really eye opening, and full of surprises! Aiko told me three different ways of pronouncing L and R sounds, the 2 to 8 ratio, and so on… Her courses are unique in that they are targeted at advanced English learners such as people working at American firms or English teachers/coaches. The learning system is also different from conventional styles: She uploads a lesson file and video each week, and we demonstrate what we’ve learned within a week by uploading our own video (“Facebook Live” or “Zoom”). This style was new to me, and I liked it a lot! I was able to learn each lesson at my own pace and repeatedly. Even after finishing the courses, I check those precious materials from time to time. Both courses were and still are helpful for my own English classes. Whenever a student speaks or reads sentences, I can check and correct their typical Japanese accents so that their spoken English becomes understandable to native speakers. Aiko’s enthusiasm impressed me. Every time I posted a question on the FB group page, she promptly replied to me. She explained everything in detail, sometimes with a voice file or a video. She was always friendly and easy-going, so I enjoyed exchanging messages with her without being nervous. That was an ideal environment for learning English pronunciation since we should relax when speaking English! I recommend her three-month intensive course for people who are working in an English-speaking environment as well as English teachers/coaches who have never learned American pronunciation properly. This course surely helps them to reduce their Japanese accents, and to speak easy-to-understand English. I recommend the 5-month coach training program for English teachers/coaches who have never learned American pronunciation properly. This program helps them to logically understand the difference between Japanese and English. They can also learn how to train their students.

If you add the 3-month marketing course, from Week 21 you will learn:

  • How to start marketing using social media
  • How to start building your e-mailing list
  • Time management, money blocks, and mindset shift

Payment Policy: If you use a Paypal transfer, a 5% paypal transaction fee will be added to the tuition. Bank transfers between Canadian bank accounts or American banks are available. American and Canadian checks are acceptable. No split payments are available. Complete the payment before the course starts.

Refund Policy: All sales are final. Aiko will send you a contract for this course and please read it through carefully before you sign it and make a payment.

Course Policy: It is your responsibility to practice on your own. If you just take this course and don’t practice or if you are not open minded to accept new information (The English language and the Japanese language are very different and they are opposite in many ways), you will not improve your pronunciation. If you don’t believe you can improve, you won’t improve. Your mind needs to be ready to learn and change.
